Keeping Calm in the Midst of a Pandemic with VR

Our daily lives have made a complete shift and transition as we watch how the COVID-19 pandemic has brought major changes in our routines. Restrictions have been placed on travel, children are no longer in schools, adults are working remotely, and our favorite restaurant and bars are closed for business. Household supplies and groceries are scarce in our local stores, and the list goes on. In addition to being stuck indoors, everyone is in search of new, fun, and safe ways to combat “cabin fever”.

To help with getting adjusted to staying indoors with limited to no interactivity with another human being, physically, here are a number of ways in which VR can help you keep calm and relax during this chaotic time:

Meditation:

With everything spiraling quickly, we all need a moment to step away and take time to reflect. Meditation can help bring peace and calm back into your day. Oculus has a free meditation experience, Guided Meditation VR, that allows you to choose from 100 environments and choose from 50+ calming music tracks. You will have the ability to customize your meditation session to fit your style. Try this experience to add some tranquility to your day.

Productivity:

Still looking for ways to bring your team together for meetings? Of course, there are several meeting apps available to use as we telework, but have you considered using VR to meet? Another free experience worth trying from Oculus is AltspaceVR. In this experience, you can easily start your own meetup or class. This is a pretty neat alternative to traditional conference calls.

Travel:

If your travel plans were canceled, no need to fret. Take the time to still visit some pretty cool destinations without having to get on an aircraft. Explor VR is a cool experience that you can download for free on your VR headset. You'll have the ability to still take that mini-vacation to a tropical destination until travel restrictions have been lifted. There are other travel apps that you can try also such as RizortVR, Smithsonian Journeys: Venice, and Guided Relaxation VR.

Fun:

VR offers tons of fun ways to keep yourself occupied. If you’re looking to ride a roller coaster, race karts, or get rid of zombies, there are experiences created for you, children, and/or friends to take advantage of during this time. Here are a few recommended experiences to try out for fun if you’re looking for something to do in the house: Epic Roller Coasters, Dead and Buried, 405 Road Rage, Suicide Squad: Special Ops VR, and a plethora of others in the Oculus store. These recommended experiences are free, so no need to worry about breaking the bank to bring some fun into your home.

Understanding how tough and challenging these times can be until we’re fully adjusted, we all need that quick escape from the reality of our daily chaos. Take this opportunity to get fully immersed into a different world. Just throw on a VR headset and travel to somewhere you’ve never been before.  We hope these recommendations can help bring peace, productivity, and fun all while helping you adjust to your “new normal”. Remember, keep calm.
